Take the weekend to make over your outdoor shower and lather up alfresco on Monday.

Whether rinsing sandy feet or bathing sun-kissed children, outdoor showers make life easier at the coast. No matter your taste—from a simple cold-water spigot to a stand-alone building—this project will have everyone clamoring to get scrubbed.

Honor your locale. Add personality with coastal-theme accessories. For this shower, we chose a metal shorebird sculpture salvaged from an old screened door. Inside, a wicker mirror and small vase give a cottage feel.

Stow away. Corner shelves elevate bath products. Sand washes easily off beachcombing finds collected in wire baskets. A pail keeps towels warm in the sun, and a metal chair or built-in bench makes dressing easier. Boat cleats hold bath mitts and comfy robes alongside wet suits hung to dry.

Treat yourself. Give guests a spa experience. Install a rain-style showerhead that promises to weather the elements. Outfit the bath with sponges and brushes, fluffy towels, and sea-scented products. Plant a climbing vine, such as rose or jasmine, to create an aromatherapy session for bathers.

Let it drain. Underfoot, let water run off by adding pressure-treated, painted, or composite decking, bricks, or stones.
