Hanging Out
"It's exotic and functional, with fun written all over it!" says Tammy of the second-floor guest room. Teak platforms suspended from heavy-gauge rope take center stage, while a punchy striped fabric on the wall and Roman shade creates a seamless backdrop. "I don't use orange often," the designer says. "But here it provides a surprising pop of color." Engineered hardwood flooring echoes the rich graining of the bed platforms, and offers tropical-wood appeal at a fraction of the cost. It's environmentally friendly, too!

Fresh Flair
The beauty's in the details in the guest bath. Pewter nautical cleats take the place of standard hardware, and brass fixtures illuminate mirrors mounted over a custom vanity. Even the flooring and countertops are unusual: Mosaic tiles form a subtle geometric pattern, and the counter is composed of a nonporous quartz material perfect for high-splash zones. Nearby, a woven-wood Roman shade ensures privacy from neighbors while filtering light.

Above it All
An all-American palette fills the third-floor sitting room and bunk room. The painted wood floors put a playful spin on traditional boat decking, while the compass rose provides a dramatic anchor for the spiral staircase ascending to the crow's nest. Tammy chose a woven area rug for the sitting room because "it has a rope-like weave with nautical appeal."

paint magic
In the sitting room, Tammy painted walls off-white and emphasized individual architectural elements (window muntins, stair treads, doors, and trim) with vibrant navy blue. She reversed this scheme in the adjacent bunk room by painting walls blue and accenting details with the neutral shade.

Stylish Stateroom
A cleat big enough to secure a Boston Whaler serves as the handle on the sliding barn door to the bunk room. Custom-made beds, inspired by those found on classic yachts, sit atop built-in storage drawers. They're practical, accessible, and—thanks to the pewter rope drawer pulls—nautical, too.

instant art
On painted walls, a life ring and boat oars become eye-catching works of art. Tammy salvaged nautical finds and painted them to suit the space. "It's an easy and inexpensive way to add character," she says.

Settle In
Just outside the back door, two teak chaises await guests interested in lounging—or relaxing with a glass of iced tea. Because they're made from durable outdoor fabric, the comfy blue-and-white bolster pillows won't fade, even in direct sunlight. And that cobalt-blue grill? Let's just say stainless has its place—in the kitchen.

build smart
The composite siding looks like wood but requires minimal maintenance. Builder James Adams chose the material for its durability and versatility: "It has all the resilience of natural wood," he says, "and is available in a variety of prefinished colors, eliminating the need to paint." The grained synthetic decking won't warp or rot, making it ideal for coastal applications. Undermount fasteners hold planks in place and prevent the risk of loose or rusty nails.
