Four simple things you can do to make any space look and live larger.

1. Buy multipurpose furniture. You can pull up a bench or ottoman for extra seating when friends stop by, or use it to display books and pictures.
2. Choose storage furniture that blends into the color of the wall. A white bookshelf on a white background will make the space around it appear bigger.
3. Declutter your surfaces. Make a room feel warm and personal, but try not to crowd every surface with unnecessary knickknacks.
4. Lighten up! Any light—whether natural or from carefully placed lamps—will make your space feel warm, inviting, and more spacious than it really is.
