Quick Fix
Four ways to enliven your home’s exterior this weekend

Your house is screaming for a makeover, but you just don’t have the time. We’ve got some easy fixes you can finish before Monday rolls around.

1. Window Dressing
Shutters add dimension and definition to existing architecture. Measure each window for exact dimensions. Size decorative shutters as if they were functional, and make sure the gap between functional shutters and the windowsill is no more than 1/16 of an inch. Cutout designs add a little punch to traditional options. Shuttercraft has a selection of coastal icons to choose from (such as an anchor, dolphin, sea horse, and palm tree), or you can create your own design. Timberlane offers a great tool called “Shutter Designer” that allows you to experiment with different colors and styles that will complement your home. See timberlaneshutters.com/ext.php.

With so many styles and options available, even the most utilitarian shutters deliver architectural punch.

2. Flower Power
Create an eye-catching border garden or container garden. Look for plantings that will thrive in your environment (native varieties will most likely be easier to maintain). We like these hardy coastal plants. For color: Phlox subulata (Creeping Phlox) in colder regions, Phlox carolina (Miss Lingaard) in warmer climates, or tickseed varieties such as Coreopsis grandiflora (Mayfield Giant) and Coreopsis lanceolata (Lanceleaf). For erosion control or on slopes: juniper or Rosa rugosa. For small-scale ground cover: succulents. Shade plants: hen and chicks, hosta, or aloe vera. Drought-tolerant plants: purple verbena or lavender. See smithandhawken.com or whiteflowerfarm.com.

Aromatic plants blend beauty with powerfully evocative fragrances.

3. Paint Pick-me-up
A small punch of color makes a big impact, so get creative with painted accents. Use your favorite color to rejuvenate your front door, spruce up trim work, or revamp porch floors or ceilings. Check out Behr’s Premium Plus Exterior Paints or Valspar’s signature brand, Seaside Retreat.

Sun, humidity, and temperature swings mean a short life span for paint. Follow these simple guidelines to keep maintenance to a minimum.

4. Welcome Mat
Hang a hammock, set out Adirondack chairs, and turn your yard into a place you can relax.
