2008 "Capture the Coast" Photo Contest Rules

TO ENTER
Entries must be black-and-white or color images taken in the United States (including Alaska, Hawaii, Great Lakes), Canada, Mexico, or the Caribbean islands. Coastal Living will select five images that best portray the coast. Photographs will be judged on quality and content.

Photographs may include landscape, lifestyle, portrait, motifs (coastal details), and people. Entries must be in the form of a 4- by 6-inch print. Digital entries may be printed and mailed or submitted electronically via e-mail as an attachment. All mailed entries must be postmarked by June 2, 2008, and received by June 9, 2008. All electronic submissions must be received on or before June 6, 2008. Mail entries via regular U.S. mail to “Capture the Coast” Photo Contest, Coastal Living magazine, 2100 Lakeshore Drive, Birmingham, Alabama 35209. Do not submit negatives or other original media, as Coastal Living will not acknowledge or return mailed entries, or be held responsible for lost, delayed, or damaged entries. All entries become the property of Coastal Living and the sponsors.

2008 Capture the Coast Photo Contest Prizes
Five amateur photographers' work will appear in our September 2008 issue. Check out the prizes the winners will receive.

To e-mail a digital entry, attach your photo to an e-mail containing your name, address, phone number, and title of the photo sent to capturethecoast@coastalliving.com. Be sure to tell us when and where the photo was taken. Photos must be in either .jpeg or .tiff formats, and file size cannot exceed 1.5 MB (up to 150 dpi). Altered or electronically enhanced images will not be considered. Up to three entries per person are allowed. A completed entry form (photocopies acceptable) must be taped to the back of each mailed 4- by 6-inch print. Failure to submit an entry following the above guidelines will result in disqualification.

Photographers chosen as finalists will be asked to provide an original negative or slide, or a high-resolution (at least 300 dpi) file on CD. Originals will be returned once the photographs have been published online.

Contest is open to amateur photographers at least 21 years old. An amateur is defined as someone earning 10 percent or less of their income from photography. Employees of Southern Progress Corporation, (“Sponsor”), its parent companies, subsidiaries, affiliates, advertising, promotion, contest design and promotion agencies, and their immediate families (spouse, children, parents, and/or members of household) are ineligible. Entrants warrant that the photographs: (1) are original and do not infringe on any copyright, (2) do not invade anyone’s privacy, (3) do not libel or slander anyone, (4) have not been published previously. If the photograph contains a readily identifiable person as a subject, the photographer must submit the name, address, and phone number of each person who is readily identifiable in the picture. This information will be used only to contact the subject if the photograph is selected for online publication. The photo subject will be required to execute a Photo Release and Waiver of Liability or the photograph will be disqualified. In consideration of the prizes awarded in this contest, winners grant to Coastal Living the first right to publish the winning images in any medium, including but not limited to the September 2008 issue of Coastal Living. Winners further agree not to publish their images in any medium while the September 2008 issue is on the newsstand. Winners otherwise will retain all rights to their photographs, and the magazine's publication of their photographs will not limit their use and ability to further market the images.

Five winning images will be selected by the judges (a grand-prize winner and four runners-up; Coastal Living reserves the right to award additional prizes of lesser value based on merit and at the discretion of the judges). Prizes are non-assignable and non-transferable. No cash in lieu of prizes and no exchange or substitution of prizes except at discretion of sponsor. All federal, state, and local taxes on prize are the responsibility of the prizewinner. Prizewinner will be required to sign statement of eligibility and release of liability. Depending on the value of the prize, winner may be required to disclose driver’s license number for identification purposes and Social Security number for tax purposes. Winners will be notified by telephone on or about July 25, 2008.

By signing the entry form or submitting an image electronically, participants accept and agree to be bound by these rules and the decisions of contest sponsors and judges whose decisions are final, relating to participation in contest, selection of winner, and awarding of prizes. By submitting an entry, participants agree to release sponsors, contest promoter, and their respective officers, directors, employees, agents, parent companies, affiliates, and subsidiaries from liability of any kind or nature for any loss, claims, damages, or injuries of any kind associated with acceptance, possession, participation in, or use of any prizes. Because of the number of entries, we are unable to respond to questions concerning receipt of an entry; no phone calls or e-mails please.
