The Living Room

What We Love

Chic Upholstered Walls: With just a hint of sheen, this fabric has blues, grays, and browns woven in―giving it depth and tying together the room’s other fabrics with subtle variations of color and texture.

Lounge-y Seating: To make a large room feel cozier, Phillip created several conversation nooks―like that pair of slipper chairs by the fireplace―within the overall seating arrangement.

The Dining Room

What We Love

Acres of Fabric: A stylized teapot pattern engulfs the small space with softness―covering all the walls and hanging as draperies.

The Urn Table Base: A Chinese pot proved the perfect tabletop support in the dining room, where the subtle theme is curved pots, large and small.

The Patterned Sisal: With its thick weave and graphic zigzag repeat, it feels as good as
it looks.

The Kitchen

What We Love

Black Cabinetry: Because dark colors recede, this inky black (stained by the manufacturer) makes the cabinetry practically disappear―a plus for kitchens that open to other spaces like this one does to the dining room.

A Contrasting Island: With its beautiful grain and medium stain, it’s like a rehabbed antique table.

Tailored Barstools: Nailheads give them a designer look, and handles on the seat backs make them easy to move around.

The Kitchen

What We Love

Tall Shutters: Brass chicken wire backed with gathered plaid fabric (right) give this nook between the kitchen and dining room a vintage feel.

Cheap-chic Lighting: Phillip had inexpensive candle lanterns wired, backed with mirrors, and mounted as wall sconces on either side of the kitchen window.

What We Love

The Over-the-Top Canopy: A four-poster bed gets the royal treatment when nestled in swaths of two different gray fabrics and suspended from the room’s crown molding bump-out. (See “Shop the Look!” below.)

The Master Suite

What We Love

Fabulous Greens and Grays: Phillip fell for the leaf-print fabric used on the windows, and built the room’s bold but still soothing chartreuse and gray scheme from there.

Cabana-striped Walls: Who says they’re just for awnings and umbrellas? Here, they tie together the various fabrics.

The Master Bathroom

What We Love

Metallic Touches: The pair of bedside table lamps, the bath’s glass mosaic tile backsplash, and the vanity’s mirror-paneled doors all provide a little bling.

The Vanity’s Sconces: Tall, slender, curvy proportions play to the high ceilings.

The Study

What We Love

Fabric Everywhere: Phillip raises up the eye (and the charm factor) in this low-ceilinged room by wrapping the whole thing with a lively vine fabric.

Pretty Lavenders: From the fabrics in the study to the walls in the bath (Classic Lilac [1002-5C] by Valspar), purple is making a comeback this fall.

The Guest Room

What We Love

Eco-chic Rug: With wide stripes, super-soft ribbing, and 50% recycled content, this indoor/outdoor rug is both good-looking and good for the environment.

Alcove Headboard: The low-slung silhouette runs the entire length of the window.

Antique-y Sconces: In the narrow space between the bed and wall, Phillip mounted lights on the headboard―wires run to outlets behind it―and he used footstools as a landing spot for books.

The Guest Bath

What We Love

Cafe Curtains: Like the ones in the bath, hung mid-window, with the rod spanning all the way to the wall, they provide privacy and still admit plenty of natural light.

2009 | Seawatch | Sunset Harbor, NC | Rec Room

Photo: Tria Giovan, Stylist: Heather Chadduck

The Rec Room

What We Love

Cheery Wall Color: This high-energy green (Betsy Ross House Moss [6005-3C] by Valspar) isn’t used anywhere else in the room, but it works because the orange and yellow in the space are just as punchy.

Flowery Curtains: Big rooms call for big-scale prints.

Those huge Wooden Spheres: Like bocce balls for giants, they’re whimsical accessories in a room dedicated to fun and games.

The Guest Suite

What We Love

The Blue/Green Combo: It’s an amped-up version of the palette in the coverlet.

Pretty Botanicals: The organic floral print on the bed is a subtle reference to the natural coastal landscape.

The Bamboo Bed: Its horizontal planking is a clean, modern take on the traditional four-poster.

The Bunk Room

What We Love

Kid-friendly Cubbies: Phillip added nautical reading lamps and little hinged doors made of plywood panels that he wrapped in raffia and embellished with nailheads.

The Outdoor Kitchen

What We Love

That Bar-height Table: With its industrial base, warm cedar top, and plush stools, it’s the perfect place to gather around for drinks while someone’s manning the grill.

Built-in Appliances: Like the grill and range -- behind stainless steel doors -- the fuel tanks are handy but tucked away.

Statement-making Lanterns: The sconce and pair of candlelit tabletop lanterns add an old-world feel to the brand new space.
