A California cottage is decked out in soothing shades of blue that blend beautifully with the ocean view outside. Shop this home in our boutique! The owners of this 2,000-square-foot cottage in Summerland, California, fell in love with its endless views of the Pacific Ocean. So Santa Barbara designer Laura Motley used the sea as inspiration to create a fresh look for the home. To furnish the large den, the designer chose a variety of fabrics to define different seating areas. Blue colors used throughout the room are reminiscent of the ocean outside, and furniture was carefully placed to avoid interfering with the views. The white denim slipcovers on the dining chairs are stain resistant, easy to clean, and become softer with use. The round table opens to seat eight. On the upper deck, aqua-colored pillows match the hue of the water below. The pillows' coral pattern reflects the sea life theme seen throughout the house. The covered porch off the first-floor bedrooms features modular seating, which can be rearranged to enjoy an afternoon nap, accommodate party guests, or make a plush pad for snuggling with pups. Many of the home’s accessories reflect its location by the shore. These vintage glass bottles are topped with shell and coral stoppers. And in the master bedroom, seashells and coral are placed on small, bracketed shelves to create a colorful wall display. Complementary prints and shades of blue are used for the custom headboard, making the space feel tied together and peaceful. The master bath showcases two of the home’s key design elements: ocean-inspired accessories and the color blue. This combination helps bring the Pacific view inside this room and throughout the cottage, creating a relaxing seaside escape.
