When a girl from Long Island meets a guy from Connecticut in sunny Southern California, there's not much chance of them heading back to the icy winters of their youth. Still, when Philip and Courtney Syrett traded in their New England roots for the California surf, they knew they'd miss the charm of their childhood homes. So they decided to import their own brand of cottage style to their surfside Venice neighborhood, transforming a boxy 1940s stucco home into a two-story shingled Cape Cod.
After they moved the kids' bedrooms downstairs and the living space and master suite upstairs and swapped out the original stucco siding for shingles, Courtney filled the house with her signature style: comfy slipcovered seating, painted furnishings, and accessories with patina. Here's how she transformed her Venice Beach home from cold to cozy.
