1. The larger the space, the bigger the fan. The following measurements will help you select the right size fixture for your
space:
Rooms 225 square feet and larger: 50- to 56-inch fan
Rooms 65 to 144 square feet: 42- to 44-inch fan
Rooms 64 square feet and under: 32-inch fan
2. Air movement is determined by the speed and pitch of the fan blades. Choose a fan with a pitch of 14 degrees for maximum circulation.
3. Fan blades should be 7 feet or higher from the floor.
4. The UL (Underwriter's Laboratories) listing is important to location. If the fixture will be outdoors, choose a damp/wet UL-listed fan to ensure longevity.
5. Fan fashion expresses individual style. Try a contemporary brushed-steel finish or add tropical breeze with rattan blades. Ask the manufacturer about mix-and-match options.
6. Remote controls are a popular accessory. Light intensity and speed can be regulated, and many models have memory to keep your previous setting on-hand.
7. A high-quality motor is important. Motors should have heavy-duty windings and sealed bearings that are always lubricated. The motor is essentially the heart of the ceiling fan―a low-quality choice could lead to noise and weak air circulation.
8. Blade finish affects longevity. Painted wood and plywood with Mylar-type coating will help keep breezes flowing for years.
9. Add lighting to your fan. Uplighting creates a relaxed, comfortable ambience. Lighting kits can also be custom-made to fit your desired style.
