Freshen Up With Rooms That Are Bright and White

A 110-year-old summer cottage on a Maine island went from dark and cold to light and airy.

Because it had not been updated in a century, the house bore dark wood finishes, heavy draperies, no insulation, and a dated addition.

Armed with 47(!) gallons of white and sky blue paint, the homeowners transformed their cottage. They covered dark wood paneling with white semigloss paint to add sheen and gave the floors a sleek look with a durable, soft blue high-gloss finish.

The watchword for this project was “simple,” so there is no clutter or anything extraneous—just clean lines and beach house necessities. The footed tub is a new addition to the bath, as are the fixtures and the waterproof woven vinyl floor.

In order to keep things easy for guests (and laundry), the homeowners used the same white towels for all the bedrooms. Streamlined window treatments frame views and bright up the rooms.
