Jan collected magazine photos to aid her in choosing furnishings and designing the built-ins throughout the house. "My poor builder and cabinet guy were like, 'Another picture, oh gosh,'" she says. "But it really helped; you don't have to describe the details."
In updating Annika's childhood room, Jan designed a built-in daybed with storage drawers underneath. Bookcase-style shelving frames the unit.
"This is our outdoor room," Jan says of the 1,000-square-foot space that encompasses a spa, fireplace, and grill. Beyond, the well-manicured lawn stretches 100 feet to a bluff and the Pacific.
Jan had the spacious living area's 5 ½-foot-square coffee table made so that "everyone could just plop down around it," she says. An antique wooden rocking horse near the sofa awaits grandchildren. "I bought it as a gift for myself with my high school graduation money," she says.
Playful red, white, and blue stripes punctuate the nautical-theme room for future grandchildren.
The dining nook, with its built-in banquette, enjoys a prime view of sunsets.
Comfortable outdoor seating invites Jan and Steve to watch the waves roll in.
Jan's unique style and attention to detail infuses every square inch of the home's interior.
Flowers bloom in a window box and a flowerbed framing a welcoming spot on the front porch. Striped pillows complement the verdant natural palette.
