The kitchen's "furniture-like cabinetry gives this space a beautiful finish," Linda says. Barry adds that the individually crafted built-ins provide another Victorian element. They represent the days before modern cabinets, when stand-alone furniture was used for storage. Cabinetmaker Jerry Boyett used glass-front doors on the upper tier along one wall to create the appearance of a china cabinet. Linda filled the shelves with antique-style farmhouse dishes and serving pieces in red and brown to tie the space to the adjacent living area.

A painted tin ceiling adds to the times-of-old aura even as 21st-century conveniences pepper the space. Oatmeal-colored solid-surface countertops bring a modern element to the large center island. An under-mount sink and stainless faucet offer the cook a helping hand with its pull-down spout. Stainless steel appliances tuck into the cabinetry. "All of the hardworking components are in the least visible places, so the room appears cohesive with the living space," Linda says.

Our decorator calls the dining room's rich wall color "chocolate pudding." Here, smooth walls mix with crisp white wainscot and sharp green accents to give this area a serene mood. Angled beneath a six-light chandelier, eight oversize ladder-back chairs surround a large European-inspired table.
