A four-poster bed trimmed in sheer plaid drapes is the centerpiece of the master bedroom. Wall-mounted bedside lighting leaves room on a skirted round table and small chest of drawers for nighttime niceties. A small chair and ottoman make a comfortable window seat for watching birds fly over the marsh.

Instead of the large windows he put elsewhere in the house, Barry placed smaller windows high on one wall. "We protected the bedroom's privacy from a neighboring lot on that side of the property," he says.

French doors lead to the master bath, dominated by a beaded chandelier hung in the middle of the room. A modern shower is equipped with hardware that creates a spa-like atmosphere. Separated by shelving, a pair of pedestal sinks with brushed-nickel hardware allows space for two. "We used historic elements," says Barry. "The pedestal sinks and claw-foot tub in the master bath recall turn-of-the-century designs."
