What's your favorite type of deck furniture?
JMK: I love white-painted or powder-coated metal—it's the perfect base for all colors of fabric on pillows and cushions. We have a lot of rain along the Pacific Northwest coast, so it's ideal to have furniture that can stay outside without worry.

Ideas for stowing essentials–towels, goggles, extra sheets–in houses short on storage?
JMK: I love L.L.Bean tote bags with an embroidered word, the owner's monogram, or even the house address. Pack them and line them up—they instantly make any crowded hall or closest look less messy.

Best place to spend $500 on decor?
JMK: ABC Carpet and Home—I'd use it to buy a few Madeline Weinrib ikat pillows. They look really great in beach houses!

I can't stop buying—
JMK: Dash & Albert striped indoor/outdoor rugs. I buy them for more spaces than I have—they're so preppy and fun, and you can hose them down! They're seriously stacked up in my linen closet.

Develop your coastal cottage’s style by following these simple tricks.

Lacy curtains, fresh florals, and plenty of monogrammed pillows are just a few of the feminine touches that give this room its calming and sweet mood. Pieces scored at thrift stores and flea markets were refreshed with paint, then artfully applied to achieve the shabby-chic distressed look.
