Arts and Culture
Charleston has a long-standing romance with culture and the arts. A growing community of fine art galleries are located downtown,
along with the century-old old Gibbes Museum of Art. Among the city’s theaters and concert halls is the recently renovated Dock Street Theater, the country’s oldest operating theater.
Arts lovers also enjoy the Charleston Ballet, the Charleston Symphony Orchestra and outstanding productions from several community theater groups. Each spring the entire city becomes a stage during the 16-day Spoleto Festival USA, an internationally-acclaimed arts festival that draws productions of theater, music, dance, opera and visual arts from around the world.
