At this hard-to-find shack on working Bass Harbor pier (near Acadia National Park), the live lobsters come straight off the boats into a tank, from which you pick a winner. Capt'n Frosty's, 210 Route 6A, Dennis, MA; 508/385-8548. Capt'n Frosty's, grafted onto the back of a 1950s-era Cape Cod dairy bar, serves wonderful fried clams-juicy but not greasy. For dessert, walk around to the ice cream stand in front. (2005)

Clam Box of Ipswich, 246 High St., Ipswich, MA; 978/356-9707 or ipswichma.com/clambox . Clam Box rejects two fixtures of modern life: credit cards and frozen seafood. The fish, scallops, and oysters taste as good as the fried clams and chowder. Look for the building shaped like a clam box. (2006)

RHODE ISLAND

Flo's Clam Shack, 4 Wave Ave., Middleton, RI; 401/847-8141. Try the fried clams, the Fiery Stuffed Quahogs, the Italian-style calamari, and the Rhode Island chowder. (2001)

Evelyn's Drive-In, 2335 Main Rd., Tiverton, RI; 401/624-3100 or evelynsdrivein.com . Evelyn's has come back strong after a 2005 fire. You can eat your lobster roll at one of the shaded picnic tables along the water. (2005)

Abbott's Lobster in the Rough, 117 Pearl St., Noank, CT; 860/536-7719 or abbotts-lobster.com. A classic summer-season-only lobster shack with great views of Long Island Sound and the Mystic River. (1999)

Lenny & Joe's Fish Tale, 1301 Boston Post Rd., Madison, CT; 205/245-7289 or ljfishtale.com . Of the two locations (Madison and nearby Westbrook), we prefer the more casual one in Madison. We especially like the fried shrimp, lobster roll, and clear-broth clam chowder. (2007)

Everything, including the clams, steamers, mussels, shrimp, bluefish, lobster, and corn on the cob (dunked in butter), cooks on an immense grill.
