Less than a mile from the center of Chatham, The Captain's House Inn is an iconic B&B. The white clapboard, dark green--trimmed 1839 Greek Revival mansion was built for a local legend, sea captain Hiram Harding, and is maintained today by owners Jill and James Meyer. "Many couples come to the Cape for the first time with great intentions of avid exploration of the area and wind up falling in love with this spot, so they stay very close to home," James says. Sixteen rooms and four suites named after the Hardings (a loving couple themselves—they had nine children), their daughters, and the ships Hiram sailed are available on the property, which includes the main house, the attached Carriage House, the stables, and the 200-year-old bow-roof Captain's Cottage that was moved by boat from Nantucket in 1928. All the rooms have fireplaces and burnished antiques artfully mixed with modern amenities. In the Captain's Cottage, the Hiram Harding room is anchored by an antique mahogany high-back bed, pumpkin pine floors, and a wood-burning fireplace. In the stables, the green-and-sand-colored Lydia Harding suite is the inn's largest accommodation, with a thickly carved four-poster king-size bed and gas fireplaces in the bedroom and living room.

Develop your coastal cottage’s style by following these simple tricks.

Without the pops of cobalt blue, this smart seating area’s neutral tones would feel a little washed out. Fun patterned pillows with drapery and flowers to match don’t take the focus off the main event, the wraparound water view from the windows.
