On the western tip of Santa Rosa Island, Fort Pickens is part of the protected Gulf Islands National Seashore. The fort itself was built in 1834, and remained in use for over 100 years. Today you can tour the fort and imagine what it was like to be there the day in 1899 when 8,000 tons of gunpowder exploded, throwing bricks more than a mile.
