Watch Hill,  Rhode Island
"Genteel" is the best word to describe The Ocean House, a Victorian grand dame of a hotel, where men in blue blazers and women in sundresses chat on a gracious veranda overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. The hotel's no-expense-spared rebuild and private yacht club feel drive the appeal.

An original stone fireplace with an 1895 cornerstone in the lobby is a natural gathering place for guests having a cocktail before grabbing dinner at the chef's counter, where they can watch the farm-to-table offerings being prepared. For special occasions, head to Seasons for its spectacular wine list and $85 tasting menus, including roasted sea scallops. The hotel's wide hallways are reminiscent of a bygone era, as is the green croquet lawn that lies straight as a ruler alongside the crisply white hotel. Private membership gets you entry into the Club Room, which oozes with dark mahogany and Ferrari-red leather bar chairs.

Signature suites, stocked with Frette linens and Molton Brown amenities, each have efficiency kitchens, giving them the feel of fabulous seaside homes. (That is, if your home has a five-diamond spa, indoor lap pool, and a squash court in the basement.)
