Highlands,  New Jersey
The Sandy Hook Lighthouse, in Fort Hancock, NJ, was completed in 1764 to warn incoming mariners of a low-lying sand deposit that stretches more than six miles out to sea. It has since survived lightning strikes, nor'easters, state feuds (NY wanted it), and assaults during the Revolutionary War (including a British occupation). Take a free tour this summer.
