Coastal Home Makeover
This Lake Michigan cottage got a much-needed makeover—but kept its historical charm.
Dark and Dreary
Before: The dim, narrow kitchen was in desperate need of some additional square footage and a design that emphasized natural light and lakefront views.
Just Like New
After: Custom cabinetry, a farmhouse sink, stainless appliances, and concrete and wood counters gave this formerly dull cottage kitchen a bright new look.
Before: Crammed into a kitchen corner, the dining nook's constricted quarters made family meals a challenge.
After: Bumping out an exterior wall allowed for a room extension that accommodated a spacious eating nook for casual family dining.
Out with the Old
Before: Significant mold damage, limited landscaping, and a dark Tudor shell made for an uninviting exterior.
Nod to New England
After: Designer Kathryn Quinn updated the home with lighter shingles, additional windows, and a white masonry base to create a Cape Cod look.
