Working with West Palm Beach interior designer Veronica Volani-Inza and Smith Moore Architects, the owners updated it, with stunning results. In the entryway, a built-in bench with simple linen cushions sets a relaxed tone for the house, and provides smart storage for beach toys and towels. Decorative butterflies add a burst of tropical color and fun in the dining room. Made from soda cans, they stand out as an exciting accent against the buttercream walls. Real nautical antiques help give the lounge an authentic sense of place. Navigational gauges are sure to spark conversation, as are the two bronze-framed portholes, used as central accent tables. Oak paneling in the sunken family room creates a visual link to the pool deck outside. French doors allow in natural light and outdoor views. Sofas with durable canvas-slipcovers, sea grass throw pillows, and a colorful dhurrie rug keep the room traffic-friendly. The kitchen brings in the tones of the beach, with horizontally scored cerused oak cabinetry and sand-colored countertops and flooring. The master suite is outfitted to look like a ship's quarters. Navy bedding paired with brass pendants made from ships' lanterns creates maritime appeal. Photos taken from nearby vantage points add local color to the walls. A brighter backdrop is used upstairs where the children sleep. Pine wood paneling is painted white, and the rooms are furnished simply with white bedding and pastel furniture. Old ships’ lanterns, electrified and made into sconces, make beautiful bedside lighting. By brightening the interiors, adding nautical accent pieces, and strengthening the connection to the outdoors, a simple house was transformed into a sophisticated and laid-back weekend retreat.
