With the right design, it totally works.
When imagining the ultimate bathroom design, many things come to mind: simple white tiling, a touch of pattern on the wallpaper or shower curtain, and—especially in a home on the coast—bright, sunny colors. But in our 2018 Idea House, the soaking tub is quite the opposite of sunny: it’s matte black…and we love it.

Idea House designer Jenny Keenan doesn’t shy away from bold color—check out her creative use of art throughout the house and her mixing of vibrant patterned wallpapers. But for the master bath in the Habersham, South Carolina, cottage, she embraced the powerful simplicity of a no-frills black-and-white color scheme and thoughtfully chose this gorgeously curved, matte black soaking tub.
“We wanted to keep the vibe as serene as possible, as if you were walking into a spa,” Keenan says.
The best way to design a bathroom around a black bathtub? Start with white or marbled floor and wall tiling so the tub immediately pops. Echo the black-and-white theme throughout the space, like Keenan did here with the Moroccan-inspired shower tiling and the vine-patterned Roman shade.
The black-and-white theme also creates a clean backdrop for natural touches that immediately warm up the space. Add a plant or two here, a small flower there, and select furniture in warm woods and natural textures for a sophisticated yet comforting vibe.
