The award-winning modern masterpiece is designed to blend seamlessly into the rugged Northern California coastline.

Venture 100 miles north from San Francisco along Highway 1 and you’ll happen upon a town that’s the complete antithesis of big city life.

The Sea Ranch, a planned community developed in the ‘60s, was designed as a place where architecture and nature can coexist in harmony. The result? A town filled with contemporary, environmentally-minded, wood-framed houses that fit into the area’s rugged shoreline as naturally as the surrounding redwoods.

One of the first, and most iconic, of these homes is the Hines House, designed by Northern California architecture icon William Turnbull. Built in 1967, the 2,300-square-foot home consists of two structures connected via a courtyard—a larger one for entertaining/public spaces and a bunk house for sleeping. The entire property, which includes one-and-a-half acres of wild, untouched land, is on the market (for the first time since 1972) for $2,275,000.

Inside and out, the Hines House is a mirror of its surroundings. Changing levels match the natural slope of the hillside, allowing for soaring ceiling heights in some spaces. Interior materials are also a reflection of the landscape, with Douglas fir and old-growth redwood cladding the walls and ceilings. Six strategically placed skylights and walls of windows help to further the feeling of immersion in nature (and showcase the area’s stunning ocean views).

With all of its innovation, Turnbull’s Hines House became the framework for Sea Ranch homes, as well as the inspiration for a new kind of relaxed modernist architecture that would go on to spread throughout California. The house, which Turnbull continued to update until the end of his life, has received many accolades over the years, including the Sunset/AIA Home of the Year Award in 1970.
