Each week, we’re bringing you top tips, favorite products, and Q&A’s with the designers in our Coastal Living and Southern Living Designer Network.
Tip 1: Unlike many, I like to use bold fabrics for drapery and roman shades - toss pillows just don't do it for me alone, I need more of a punch. I use a single fabric as a springboard to build the rest of my textile and furnishings palette.
Tip 2: Texture is just as important as pattern - sisal, grasscloth, mohair throws, Mongolian lamb pillows - all of these textures elevate the fabrics and create a layered effect.
Tip 3: Use bold prints for windows; they act like a piece of art, and you can pull all the colors out as accents around the room. Some use a rug as the foundation of their design plan, I use a single bold statement fabric.
Tip 4: Mix figurative, geometric, solids, textures and big and small prints. Nothing is more boring than a bunch of solids; you need variety. Too many similar fabrics compete, so be careful about using too many geometrics together or a bunch of small prints - it's a delicate balance and you need a bit of this and a bit of that.
Tip 5: Invigorate a small piece of furniture with bold pillows. This is a small investment and will make a big impact. Use a geometric and a pattern, like a floral or figurative or animal print and mix and match.
