Found! The Sweetest, Comfiest Flip Flops You’ll Ever Own
And they’re made from a surprise material.
When San Francisco-based shoe brand Allbirds launched in 2016, they carried with them a bold claim: Not only were their kicks eco-friendly and affordable, they also happened to be “the world’s most comfortable shoes.” Fast-forward to 2018, and they have the cred to back that up—including multiple celeb fans (Leonardo DiCaprio is reportedly an investor) and millions of pairs sold.
And while their signature wool sneakers might be their lifeblood, a new line of Allbirds flip flops called Sugar Zeffers are making serious waves, and not just for the comfort. That’s thanks to an innovative material the company used in the manufacturing dubbed Sweetfoam because it’s derived from—what else?—sugarcane.

Lightweight and colorful, Sugar Zeffers are the brand’s first to employ the unique material, which is spun from renewable sugarcane in facilities that run on renewable power. This makes Sweetfoam, used to craft the shoes’ cushy soles, the world’s first carbon-negative green EVA—a potential game-changer for the footwear industry.
The brand eventually plans to use Sweetfoam in all of its products and to share the technology with any company that desires it. But until sugar-coated shoes are the norm, you’ll have to snatch up a pair of the brand’s Zeffers—or several. At $35, we’re ordering one in every hue.
