It’s hard not to want to transport yourself to the romantic, pastel-colored shorelines that artist Teil Duncan depicts in her series of abstract beach paintings. That’s precisely why the 26-year-old Charleston, South Carolina–based painter has racked up a considerable number of fans, including interior designer/blogger Erin Gates of Elements of Style. “I’m obsessed with her paintings!” says the Boston-based designer. “They’re happy and bright, and a great mix of figurative and abstract.”
Duncan found her niche in these light-drenched beach scenes after settling in Charleston. “I was drawn to the laid-back vibe of the beach, but I also wanted to infuse some of Charleston’s refined spirit with a whimsical pastel palette,” she says. Most of her paintings stem from personal photos of her trips to nearby Folly Beach, where she says she is constantly on the lookout for interesting people and patterns. “My paintings transport people to a time of leisure,” she says. “I think people who like my paintings are drawn to the sense of escape in them.”
