7 Adorable Swimming Puppies
By Madeleine Frank
Seth Casteel, author of the best-selling book Underwater Dogs helps shelter pets find homes—and takes some splashy pictures along the way. Here are some of our favorite puppy pictures from his book.
Beagle mix Ava paws her way to Casteel. Like most of the puppies he photographed, Ava was a rescue puppy up for adoption.
Iggy the pug gives Casteel a playful look. "Pets are always candid," he says. "They live in the moment, and they wear their hearts on their sleeves."
"And having the chance to explore it is probably one of the most exciting things that a dog can do." Pup Monty takes the plunge.
"Dogs have an incredible connection with water that goes back thousands of years," Casteel says. Popsicle, a puggle mix, swims right up to the camera.
Pringles and Pickme
Each dog Casteel photographed, like this young pair of terrier mixes, received swimming safety lessons on how to exit the pool. Pringles and Pickme swim through the water confidently.
“Any time I can use joyful images to promote rescue adoption, count me in,” says Casteel. Terrier mix Rolley’s sweet face captured on camera does just that.
"And having the chance to explore the water is probably one of the most exciting things that a dog can do,” says Casteel. Ruger, a black Labrador retriever, jumps right in.
Seth Behind the Scenes
Casteel photographed about 1500 puppies to get the 72 shots that are in the book. Only the dogs most comfortable in the water were photographed. “The process requires a lot of patience,” he says. “But some take to it quickly and start thriving, and those are the ones you’ll see in the book.”
