Editors’ Choice: 10 Best Summer Hotels on the Water
Shutters on the Beach
Santa Monica, California
Book It: Shutters on the Beach
I love Shutters for its pure California vibe with a low-key but assured sophistication. It's also right on one of the best stretches of sand in the state. And you cannot beat the neighboring Santa Monica Pier for old-fashioned summer fun and seafood, Ferris wheel and all.
Casa Madrona Hotel & Spa
Book It: Casa Madrona
Part of this sophisticated hotel overlooking Sausalito's insanely picturesque harbor is a circa-1885 mansion that has been gorgeously restored, and that's my Bay Area dream escape. A getaway to Casa Madrona can be a serene retreat or fun-filled destination with beautifully curated adventures (check out the Learn to Sail package). Also, the spa is fantastic.
The Virginia Hotel
Cape May, New Jersey
Book It: The Virginia Hotel
Pure delights abound in this all-American summer resort town, and The Virginia Hotel is at the center of it all. From its wide veranda lined with ginger-bread latticework and dotted with tailored couches, to its striped beach tents on Steger Beach, this is Cape May heaven.
Watch Hill, Rhode Island
Book It: Ocean House
A true grand-dame hotel with knockout views, not to mention luxurious services and fabulous activities for every age. Ocean House's expansive porches are among the best in America for watching the sea and drinking excellent cocktails. The OH! Spa is award-winning, and with good reason. Without peer.
Chatham Bars Inn
Chatham, Cape Cod, Massachusetts
Book It: Chatham Bars Inn
This is Editor in Chief Steele Marcoux’s favorite Cape Cod getaway that combines vintage style and luxurious amenities right on the beach, and what a beauty Chatham Bars Inn is. A classic summer resort for all generations on one of America's greatest playgrounds: Cape Cod.
Book It: Hidden Pond
This is a little bit of a cheat, because it's not literally on the ocean, but this Kennebunkport escape is worth a little trek to the beach. It feels like you’re at summer camp, but with a killer restaurant on property. The cabins at Hidden Pond are among my all-time favorite hideaways. And the outdoor showers are some of the best I’ve ever experienced.
Charleston, South Carolina
Book It: Zero George
The best in a city known for its bests. I adore the historic patina on the buildings, the pitch-perfect amenities and creature comforts, the seductive piazza (the Charleston term for the porch), and an in-house open kitchen with regular cooking classes, helmed by one of America’s hottest young chefs. (Make sure to inquire about the bespoke sailing and beach excursions as well.) Like stepping into the perfect Instagram photo.
The Grand Hotel
Mackinac Island, Michigan
Book It: The Grand Hotel
I love the Great Lakes, which have a summer magic unlike any other coastline in America, and this historic waterfront hotel channels that magic. It all starts with that grand porch, its columns, and those rocking chairs. This is a wonderful getaway that can be pure romance for couples and adventure-filled fun for families. In short, ideal.
Fogo Island Inn
Fogo Island, Newfoundland
Book It: Fogo Island Inn
Fashion-forward architecture and interior design, stunning location, and real authenticity. Breathtaking all year-round, but I love it in the summer for long days and journeys out on the water.
Clayoquot Wilderness Resort
Vancouver Island, British Columbia
Book It: Clayoquot Wilderness Resort
You think you don't camp? Think again. This is the ultimate glamping destination, and it's accessible only by floatplane or boat. The luxury tents are matched only by the exquisite scenery and wildlife.
