Our Favorite Photos of 2017
The January/February Issue | The Cover
It’s not often that stock images land our cover, but this photo taken by the supremely talented Julien Capmeil captures everything we want on the front of a winter issue: an escape that features a seat saved just for you.
The January/February Issue | The Story: Coastal Twenty Botanicals
To celebrate our 20th anniversary year, we launched “Coastal Twenty”—a collection of our favorite things (from botanical leaves in January/February to Tiki drinks in December) that appeared in every issue. I love the layering of the 3-D elements, photo, and illustrations here. It creates such a successful combination.
The March Issue | The Story: Dream Weaver
This story—about a small town in France and the revival of its gorgeous old-world weaving tradition—is one of my all time favorite productions. Producing internationally has its hurdles, from obtaining permits to overcoming language barriers (Why don’t I speak French?!), but having photographer Clara Tuma on board eased all those challenges. She and I collaborated to fine tune the details and bring home one of my very favorite shoots ever.
The April Issue | The Cover
For our “Blue Issue” cover, we headed to these incredible over-water huts in Belize. This shoot came together and was shot in under a week! The photo crew battled challenging weather but nailed the shot thanks to a short window of sunny skies. Photographer Julien Capmeil and stylist Heather Chadduck Hilllegas for the win—always!
The May Issue | The Cover
We shot the cover for our 20th anniversary issue from the waters off Gasparilla Island, Florida, a gorgeous spot on the Gulf of Mexico. Our lunch break on this day consisted of burgers on nearby Cabbage Key at the spot that claims to have inspired Jimmy Buffett’s famous “Cheeseburger in Paradise.” Fun fact: our former photo editor and friend Kristen Fielder styled this shoot.
The May Issue | The Story: This Calls for a Celebration
To celebrate our 20th birthday, we created six different beach party themes, and this happy scene opened the series. It was shot right in front of the lighthouse seen on the May cover, above. We spent the pre-dawn hours blowing up those balloons, which involved transporting a massive 110-cubic-foot helium tank from Tampa. (Luckily our rental car happened to be a convertible, so we dropped the top in order to fit the tank!)
The May Issue | The Story: Table for 20
Our Table for 20 story is packed with all the tips and recipes you need for feeding a crowd at the beach, including this gorgeous sandwich spread that's just right for an easy lunch. This shot is so fun and colorful! It epitomizes breezy entertaining on the shore.
The May Issue | The Story: Rites of Summer
I love both of these shots so much: the lighting, styling, beautiful and graphic food, and hints of nostalgia. All of the elements work so beautifully to evoke the feeling of best-selling cookbook author and blogger Jenny Rosenstrach’s summer memories in the kitchen. See all of the photos from this story and get Jenny’s delicious recipes.
The June Issue | The Story: Caribbean Queen
The combination of textures, patterns, and color in this shot make it incredibly successful. See all 1,800 square feet of this pink Bahamas cottage.
The July/August Issue | The Story: Summerhouse Revival
This house on Lake Michigan—and our photo crew—was spectacular. (Take a tour of the colorful house here.) I particularly love the seamless way the team incorporated the kids in this exterior shot. It’s so fun, and it screams “summer!”
The September Issue | The Story: Breakfast by the Numbers
I love a great graphic food shot, and the Time Inc. Food Studios team nailed this one (it’s the opener to our mouthwatering breakfast feature). I want this printed and hanging in my kitchen! And just wait till you see the recipe that ran on the adjacent page (hint: Fried Lobster Tails with Sweet Corn Waffles and Spicy Maple Syrup).
The November Issue | The Cover
This issue’s concept—our first-ever “Feel Good Issue”—and cover are in perfect harmony. Can you imagine kicking back on this waterfront perch? There’s not much in the world that would feel better. See our list of 13 ways to feel happier right now, from the November issue.
The December Issue | The Cover
Our December issue was all about Hawai’i, and the cover, shot on gorgeous Kaua’i, is the perfect image to close 2017. This shoot was so fun to produce and see come to life. It required so many permits and emails, but we had the absolute perfect crew for the job—and as you can see, the perfect setting. See all of our favorite things about Hawai'i and our all-Hawai'i-themed issue here.
