Coastal Style Icon Sarah Vickers's Favorite Things
Not since Jackie Kennedy donned her classic sleeveless button-down aboard a Nantucket sloop has there been as polished a style setter as Sarah Vickers. The co-founder of apparel company Kiel James Patrick, Vickers offers an irresistible view into the good life via her Instagram feed and fashion/lifestyle blog, Classy Girls Wear Pearls. Underlying her style choices is an emphasis on American-made products. Here, Vickers shares her favorite summer traditions and made-in-the-U.S.A. essentials for the season.
Her Summer Ritual

"I love packing a late-afternoon seaside picnic and staying to watch the sunset by the water. This handmade blanket keeps me warm on cool summer nights."
Her Idea of a Night Out
Pack a picnic, and head out to Newport, Rhode Island, for a memorable evening under the stars with Newport Film. Each week the summer festival presents a range of heart-felt, compelling documentaries to view on the lawn of one Newport's iconic locales. Past films have included Iris shown at Rosecliff Mansion, Tiger Tiger at the Norman Bird Sanctuary, and Dior and I shown on the lawn of Doris Duke's former estate Rough Point. It’s a wonderful way to spend an evening with friends and perfect for locals and visitors alike.
Her Favorite Summer Appetizer
I’m always on the hunt for easy, delicious, and stylish appetizers. When it comes to summer entertaining, I prefer to spend more time outdoors with family and friends and less time in the kitchen. One of my favorite dishes to serve is Mexican Shrimp Cocktail, with lime, cilantro and avocado served chilled in a martini glass. If you like a little extra spice, jalapenos are a tasty addition to the dish.
Her Evening Ritual
Our lake has the most beautiful sunsets. We love setting a fire just before sundown to watch the vibrant sun be replaced by the light of the fire. In the summer, it is the best spot to have friends over, listen to music, make s'mores and share stories. It wouldn’t feel like summer without making s’mores at least once. Replace the Hershey’s chocolate with a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup for a delicious new take on a classic favorite
Her Favorite Beach Excursion
Mohegan Bluffs on Block Island is one of the most stunning places to visit in New England. At the end of the Mohegan Bluffs Trail, there is a one hundred-step stairway leading to the shoreline with an endless view of the Atlantic Ocean. Standing on the rocky beach below to admire the bluffs looming large above is well worth the hike back up the stairs. I have to visit at least once a summer. It’s the perfect spot for exploring, sunbathing, and beach picnics. Bring a camera, as you will want to take plenty of pictures.
Her Summertime Sunglasses
Everyone has a signature pair of sunglasses that they wear all summer long. This pair of glasses completes any look from swimwear to evening attire. I would be utterly lost without my favorite pair of Karen Walker Super Duper Strength Sunglasses. I wear them with everything. I’m a huge fan of over-sized, tortoiseshell glasses, as they add a touch of glam to the most basic of looks. I keep a pair in my bag and a spare in the car at all times.
Her Fun Summer Manicure
A fresh manicure, salty hair, and sun-kissed skin are my summer beauty necessities. I often go with a fun update to the classic French manicure: a pink base and copper tips. I ask for this combo so often that my nail salon knows when I arrive to bring out the OPI Passion and A Real Show Copper gel polishes. My shimmery pale pink nails with bronze tips looks elegant when dressed up for summer weddings and casual with jean shorts and a t-shirt. Gel manicures usually last up to two weeks and I like a polish that compliments everything.
Her Sunny Day Hat
Any trip to Nantucket should include a visit to Peter Beaton Hat Studio located on 16.5 Federal St. Browse through the classic, one-of-a-kind selection of lock-stitched straw hats that can be customized your fit and trim. With the summer heat and humidity, I keep my out-of-control hair in check by wearing a lot of hats. It’s become a tradition to add a new Peter Beaton Hat to my wardrobe each summer. In the fall I store them in the Peter Beaton signature black and white striped hatbox until they are ready to be worn again.
Her Favorite Picnic Lunch
New England is known for it’s fresh seafood and buttery lobster rolls served in quaint, family-run restaurants. There are a lot of great places to choose from such as Flo’s in Newport or The Clam Shack in Kennebunkport, but my absolute favorite place to get a lobster roll is Larsen’s Fish Market on the Vineyard. This charming seafood shack not only offers delicious food, but also an authentic experience. Order from the fish market window and take your meal down to one of the nearby docks or lobster traps to sit and enjoy. I love watching the local fisherman arrive on boats with their catch of the day.
Her Print Preference
Gingham is my summer pattern of choice, especially in a beautiful navy-and-white combination. It makes every outfit look extra chic and stylish, whether it’s worn in the form of shorts or a bathing suit cover-up. This season there are so many great pieces to choose from. Here are a few of my current must have gingham pieces:
Her Favorite Breakfast Treat
No trip to Nantucket is ever complete without paying a visit to Downy Flake Donuts. I dream about this breakfast nook all winter long, as they have the most delicious chocolate glazed and sugar donuts. Whenever I'm on the island, I try to wake up before 9 to pick up a dozen as they usually sell out pretty quickly. I love to sit on the beach and enjoy a breakfast of donuts and coffee before the hot afternoon sun clears up the morning fog and warms up the sand.
Her Afternoon Hangout
Escape the crowded Newport Wharf and head to Castle Hill for a relaxing afternoon watching the sailboats glide by on the harbor. I love to take in the beauty of the Newport Bridge and rugged landscape of neighboring Jamestown Island from one of the hotel's iconic white Adirondack chairs scattered throughout the lawn. It is the best place to watch the sunset and enjoy a cocktail or two with friends and family before heading out to dinner. I always recommend a visit to Castle Hill to anyone traveling to Newport for the first time.
Her Summertime Sipper
On hot summer evenings I love a refreshing summer cocktail to enjoy outdoors near the lake. My husband and I have an outdoor tiki bar and it can be fun testing out new recipes that are easy to make. One of our go to drinks is a Keel Vodka Lemonade with a spritz of lime. It has a smooth taste and I love that Keel is a light vodka.
Lavender Basil Lemonade
1 Part Newman's Own Lemonade
1 Part Keel Vodka
Half a Part Pellegrino
3-4 Lemon Slices
Pinch of Lime
Crushed Ice Optional
Her Entertaining Trick
I can't drive by a local farm stand without stopping to pick up flowers to fill my vases at home. Sunflowers and hydrangeas are impossible to resist. Fresh flowers equal instant happiness, and they brighten any dinner party. Rhode Island has a good number of farm stands to visit. Some of my favorites include Schartner's Farm, Exeter, RI; Confreda Farms, Hope, RI; Sweet Berry Farm, Middletown, RI, Young Family Farm, Little Compton, RI, and South Kingston Farmer's Market, Wakefield, RI.
Her Favorite Summer Tote
Straw totes are perfect for summer vacation travels. I love this navy color block tote from Tory Burch. The tassels give it a playful, bohemian vibe that makes it unique. It fits all my beach essentials and is the perfect size to take along on a day of shopping. I love that it is so versatile and can be worn for a number of different activities (I like to pack lightly for my weekend getaways). The structured silhouette provides a lot of support, and I like that I can carry a lot of items without changing the shape of the bag.
